We all know that October is “think pink” month — Breast Cancer Awareness month. But it’s important, as we come to the final week of October, that we do not take Breast Cancer Awareness out of focus. We all know someone who’s life has been touched by the disease, for me it is my mom. It’s the second most diagnosed cancer in women, affecting one in every eight women in the U.S.
3D mammography is currently the most modern screening and diagnostic tool available for early detection of breast cancer. Why is early detection key? There are more treatment options and a better chance for survival. During the 3-D portion of the exam, the X-ray arm — which uses a comparable radiation dose to a traditional mammogram — sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images in a matter of seconds.
It only takes 30 seconds — and detects 41% more invasive cancers than a traditional 2D mammogram. It also reduces callbacks for a second look by up to 40%.
My mom is an eight-year breast cancer survivor so awareness and screening are very personal for me. When I joined the “family history” segment of society a good friend encouraged me to request a 3D mammogram at my next appointment. Since that mammo I have parroted what I learned about the benefits to every women in my life. My hope is that spreading the message about the latest and most advanced 3D mammography could cause the early detection and successful treatment of another mom, grandmom, aunt, sister or daughter. And now I want your help getting the word out there!
Tell your friends and loved ones about 3D mammography. Now through November 9th, for every share of the Tell A Friend campaign from our social media sites, Wee Chic will donate $1 to the Johns Hopkins Breast Imaging Innovation Fund* for research. To share, visit www.facebook.com/weechic or search #weechicmoms on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Let’s show the women in our lives that their health matters every month of the year.
