Halloween starts the same way for my little family each year. A rush to get home from work before trick or treaters come knocking, a flat panic assembling and attaching the parts of the princess, or butterfly or fairy butterfly princess costume my daughter insisted on and a search for an additional hauling device for the plastic-pumpkin-exceeding amounts of candy that she will collect throughout the night.
This year Halloween is on a Saturday (Yay!) and I’ll have the whole day to prep the overly girly costume I bought under duress but I have a plan for that plastic-pumpkin-exceeding amount of candy that I have not had in past years. We are going to share it! More specifically we are going to share it with kids that don’t have a brand new pretty princess costume every year, kids that live not sure where their next meal is coming from and for whom candy is a luxury that they have learned not to expect. Along with my teammates here at Wee Chic and their children, my daughter and I will donate a portion of her collected candy to Baltimore Hunger Project this Halloween.
Baltimore Hunger Project assembles and delivers kid friendly weekend food packages to elementary school children in the City and the County who would normally come to school hungry on Monday mornings. One in five children in Maryland is at risk of hunger and in Baltimore City alone, over 82% of students receive daily free and reduced price meals; that equates to nearly 72,000 children that may go hungry between school days.
Obviously, Baltimore Hunger Project can use more than candy (and we will get to that in a moment) but every child deserves the simple joy of a sweet treat and for these kids and their families, joy can be in short supply. I hope you and your kids will join Team Wee Chic in our efforts by bringing 25 or more pieces of wrapped candy to Wee Chic from Monday, November 2nd to Saturday, November 7th. Our hope is to collect enough candy to place a treat in the weekend food package of each child for the rest of 2015. As a big thank you for helping us reach our goal, Wee Chic will offer 20% Off your entire clothing purchase on the day that you donate.
We also encourage you to learn more about Baltimore Hunger Project. We will be accepting cash/check donations as well. A $200 donation provides weekend packages for one child for the entire school year, and a $5 donation provides one weekend meal. Make checks payable to “Baltimore Hunger Project”. You can also donate here. Wee hope to see you!
